Four years ago today, our hearts were plunged into a season of pain, darkness and loss. Our oldest son, Caleb, died tragically on Jan, 15, 2022, in an auto accident near Black Mountain, NC.
Losing him so young (he was 33) forever marked us and our family. He was an exceptionally gifted dancer and choreographer. His creativity was legendary. From a young age, his artistic talents took him to NYC to dance after 9/11, and to churches, conferences, and camps where he taught on art and God’s heart for worship.
Along with his immense artistic talent, it was his love and affirmation of young people that set him apart. At his memorial, person after person shared with us how much his encouragement, faith and kindness impacted their lives and families. He mined for the gold in every young person he met.
Although we experienced great pain and darkness in our grief of losing him, we choose to focus on the light today: the light that Caleb brought to our world and the light of our eternal Savior, Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the World.
Today, on the anniversary of his passing, our family is launching “Art and Light Movement”, a nonprofit created to help kids go to camps for the arts (for worship, music, dance, theater, film making, writing and outdoor adventure) in TN and NC.
These are the things Caleb loved and lived for. Camps played a large role in shaping who he became, so we want to honor him by helping other creative young people go to art camps to excel in their art.
We chose the name “Art and Light” because that was the name of the media company he started, “ Art and Light Media. We used the word “Movement” because his life was always about creative motion. And we pray this nonprofit can ignite a movement of creative young people honoring God with their art,
